Final Music

We had some copyright issues with the music we used previously, therefore we then selected an appropriate copyright free soundtrack from Soundcloud. We have chosen a calming classical piano and strings piece that contrasts our trailer's violent nature.

Music Possibilities

We have looked at many different music possibilities for our trailer that will fit our social realism genre and that will be powerful enough to match our narrative. We have looked at covers of these songs on sound cloud that would be royalty free and free to use.

Website Inspiration

We looked at the following websites for inspiration for layout, fonts, webpages and other aspects that we would like to create for our website.

IF I STAY

We looked at the 'If I Stay' website for inspiration for the layout as the layout is quite similar to the wix template we are using. We like the simplistic clear picture at the top which is an iconic image for the film.

THE SPECTACULAR NOW

We also looked at the website for 'The Spectacular Now', we liked the stylistic look to the website and the rollover text on a few of the images, used as links.

Social Media

We have created a Skyline Studios Facebook page to promote our trailer and get feedback on our ideas and experiments.
For example we posted asking which name people would prefer for our film in order to get audience opinions.

We also created an Instagram page for people to follow to find out more about our film, White Ribbon and follow the creation and promotion processes.

Social realism genre

We have done some research into social realism following our recent change of genre.

The introduction of social realism to film was to bring authentic representations of the working class to screens, which were often absent from the mainstream British media and culture at the time (mid 1950s).

During the early sixties, rough-edged, often black-and-white character pieces, often referred to as “kitchen-sink dramas,” narratives became more popular and at the end of the decade, Ken Loach, a political filmmaker, took social realism even further with the ground-breaking Kes, a tough and grimy portrait of a boy in a Northern England mining town, featuring nonprofessional actors.

The legacy of British social realism continues more recently with the work of many filmmakers, such as Mike Leigh, Lynne Ramsay, and Andrea Arnold.

Poster Inspiration

This social realism poster is simplistic yet effective. We would like to portray this kind of stylistic design and make an understated poster that leaves the audience intrigued and doesn't give too much away.

We also looked at this poster for the social realism film, Fishtank. We really like the spaced out simplistic font and again the understated effect that the poster has.

Trailer first draft

This is our first draft of our trailer, 'White Ribbon'.
There are a few black screens with writing on to help us remember where to insert the remaining shots we need to film.

How we created the bruises

We created these bruises using different colour eye shadows layered onto of each other to create realistic bruises. In some shots the bruises looked a bit sparkly so we edited them slightly on iMovie.

Title change

We have decided to change the name of our trailer to 'WHITE RIBBON'.
We have chosen this name because the use of a white ribbon represents the 'white ribbon campaign', an organisation that campaigns to stop domestic violence against women.
We thought this was very suitable as our trailer is now focused on domestic abuse and this new title is very fitting with our social realism genre.

Certificate rating for our film

We have decided to make our film a 15 certificate rating.  Because White Ribbon is about domestic abuse, this could be upsetting for some viewers and there will be many violent scenes throughout the film to portray the realism of living with domestic violence.

Genre Decisions

After much deliberation we have decided to change the genre of our film to social realism. After starting work on our trailer we have found that the feel of our film is more social realism focused as opposed to psychological thriller. We are now creating a social realism film about domestic abuse.

Initial Website Ideas

When doing some research on Wix, we found this template that we felt could be really effective for our trailer's brand and overall look. We believe that this layout will work well with the images we have and to fit with the social realism promotional package we are creating.

Underwater Shots

To get these underwater shots for the end of our trailer we used an underwater phone case that allowed us to put our iPhone into the case and drop it into the water whilst recording. We are very happy with how these shots turned out as we feel they look impressive and effective.

Costume

Costume is very important to our trailer as we wanted to reflect the characters personalities and emotions within their costume. We did this mostly through the use of colour.
James, the psychotic boyfriend is seen wearing mostly black throughout the trailer representing his dark and evil side.

Bethan, the victim of domestic violence is seen in most of the trailer wearing pink, this represents her vulnerability and innocence.

Trailer Inspiration - The Boy Next Door

The Boy Next Door is a thriller about a newly divorced woman who falls for a younger man who has recently moved in opposite her, but their love affair soon takes a dangerous turn.
We have taken inspiration from the trailer as the mise-en-scene reflects the mood we would like to portray in our trailer as well as having a few similarities with the storyline, the main example being a relationship with the mother.

Trailer Inspiration - Orange is the New Black

We have looked at Orange is the New Black as inspiration for the beginning of our trailer as the fast paced photos gives an effect we would like to use to show the victims of the abuse of our main character. We are going to take pictures of bruises on a number of girl's faces and edit them together to create an effect like the opening to Orange is the new Black.

Filming Process

Today we went to Tunbridge Wells to film some establishing shots with our actor James. We managed to get a time lapse on the high street and our opening shot of him on the train.

We are thinking of potentially using this shot for our website and/or poster as we think it is a powerful image that would look good with our theme and vision.

New logo

We have changed the logo to a more simplistic white one which will look better on a black screen than our original logo with the photo background. We created this on word.

Title options

We have discussed a range of titles for our film and we have come up with these possibilities:
  • Listen
  • Broken
  • Obsession
  • Infatuation
We will create a questionnaire and ask for others opinions to help us decide which title to use.

New Actors

After re-considering our actors prior to our first filming session we have now chosen Bethan and James. Both of these actors attend our school so it will be easy to contact them and meet up for filming. We will do test shoots with both Bethan and James to make sure that they will be able to portray the characters we want, as this was something we failed to do with the previous actors.

Anime

This is our Anime created on iMovie to help us get an understanding of what our trailer will look like, as well as trying out timings for shots and potential music. Creating this anime has been very useful for us as we are now able to see which shots may need improvement, which ones we still need to film and how long each shot should be shown for.

Filming First Try

We spent the evening at Meg's house filming the house shots we needed with our two actors. The filming actually took a lot longer than we anticipated because we had to repeatedly film the same thing over until we got the perfect take which often took around 6 or 7 times. This has made us think about casting new actors as this could be very inefficient when it comes to filming other scenes for our trailer where we need to be focused and productive.

Storyboard

We have drafted our first storyboard for our trailer, we have drawn out and annotated each scene we hope to film in order to plan out our trailer and see the whole thing together visually. We can also take this storyboard with us on filming days to reference what shots we need to film etc.

Trailer Inspiration - Broadchurch

We looked at popular TV drama Broadchurch for inspiration for our trailer. We particularly liked the understated and dramatic music and the mise-en-scene components that create the mysterious mood to the show.
The amazing cinematography in Broadchurch has motivated us to create a trailer which encompasses this same style and  feel.
